The Pell of it All
Exhibit Hall C
The reinstatement of Pell Grants for incarcerated college students in July 2023 transformed the landscape of postsecondary education in prison overnight. Since then, postsecondary institutions have worked diligently to navigate the complex approval process. Leaders from across the field break down key roadblocks and provide an overview of the progress made in the first 18 months of Pell’s return.

To start the session, journalist Robert Samuels discusses his work, including “His Name Is George Floyd: One Man’s Life and the Struggle for Racial Justice,” which earned him the 2023 Pulitzer Prize for General Nonfiction. He then leads a conversation with four formerly incarcerated leaders as they reflect on the need for postsecondary education in prison programs to create opportunity pathways for their students.
