College student transfers declined 8.1% this fall, a steep drop compared to fall 2019, when transfers were down by only 1.7%. This fall’s transfer decrease is also much larger than the 2.4% drop seen for continuing or returning students who enrolled in the same colleges they attended prior to the fall.
The results are contained in a new report released today by the National Student Clearinghouse Research Center, entitled COVID-19 Transfer, Mobility, and Progress Fall 2020 Final Report. It tracked the number of students whose enrollment in fall 2020 occurred at a different institution than their last enrollment and compared that to the transfer patterns of similar students in fall 2019 (the pre-pandemic baseline).
The data come from a national sample of institutions representing 92% of the Clearinghouse’s universe of institutions. The research was conducted with support from Ascendium and ECMC Foundation.
